Defile
Susan Norrie
2001

In Defile the central image to which each network of particular associations returns, as a black-painted cardboard box; a simple shoebox like those used by children to coolect beetles and insects. There is an obvious allusion here to the temptation of Pandora's casket; curious viewers are enticed to enter the web of information via holes punched into the lid of the box.

Defile explores invasive and unsettling possibilities within the interactive process. Focusing on malevolent tendencies within human endeavour, Norrie has constructed a circuit of images that have been taken from documentation of environmental catastrophes. As representations of bureaucratic blunders and mismanagement, they also reveal shortfalls and errors within scientific research. Often, hope of a better life turns out to be nothing better than hell on earth.
